Part 6 – Algebra Test

The algebra test is part 6 of the exam. The algebra section of the test contains twelve questions.

The algebra part of the test covers the skills that you should have learned in a basic or introductory algebra class.

Intermediate and advanced algebra problems are included in the college math section of the exam.

## Accuplacer Algebra – Question Types and Tips

The examinations usually include three main types of introductory algebra questions.

**1)** You will need to be able to perform operations with algebraic expressions and formulas, like in this example.

What is the value of the following expression:

when *x* = 2 and *y* = −2 ?

Explanation: In this algebra test question, you are being asked to calculate the value of an expression by substituting its values.

To solve this problem, put in the values for x and y and multiply.

(2 × 2 × 2) + (3 × 2 × − 2) − (−2 × − 2) =

(2 × 4) + (3 × − 4) − (4) =

8 + (−12) − 4 =

8 − 12 − 4 =

−8

**2)** There will be also computations on equations with integers and rational numbers.

Integers are whole numbers. In other words, they are not fractions or decimals.

You may have to simplify an equation that contains only integers.

Tip: Two negative signs together make a positive.

Here is an example problem with integers.

−3(7 − 2) − 4(3 − 4) = ?

Explanation: Complete the operations inside the parentheses first.

Remember to be careful when multiplying the negative numbers:

−3(7 − 2) − 4(3 − 4) =

−3(5) − 4(−1) =

(−3 × 5) − (4 × −1) =

−15 − (−4) =

−15 + 4 = −11

**3)** You will see problems on solving equations, inequalities, and practical problems like those provided at the first link below.

Accuplacer algebra test problems in the college math section include linear equations and inequalities, factoring, basic geometry, quadratic equations, exponents, binomials, polynomials, square roots, negative rationals, and absolute values.
