Important Accuplacer Study Advice

You need to know what to avoid on the day of your test:

The computer adjusts your questions – Take Your Time!

Remember that the Accuplacer test is a computer-adaptive exam.

This means that you will take the examination on a computer, and the questions will be adjusted according to your skill level.

If you answer a few questions incorrectly, the Accuplacer software will give you easier questions because it assumes you are at a lower skill level.

The test is not timed – Don’t rush and make costly mistakes!

You want to avoid getting easy questions because they are worth fewer points.

This will result in you receiving a lower overall score on your exam.

If you are doing well on the actual day of your Accuplacer testing, each question will get more difficult.

So, you should notice that the questions are becoming more advanced as you progress through the exam if your performance is good.

The importance of a good score – Avoid extra classes!

If you are looking for preparation materials for the Accuplacer test, you probably already know the importance of a good score.

You need to know that if you do not score well on the exam, you will be placed into developmental classes before you can start college.

These types of developmental courses, such as developmental English or introductory math, are non-credit bearing.

Having to take classes like this can be devastating for some students.

These classes cost extra, lengthen your study program, and delay your graduation date.

Therefore, it is definitely worth it to study, to do Accuplacer practice test exercises, and to be well prepared for these examinations.

In order to study for the Accuplacer exam, you need to know the best preparation methods to raise your score.

The Accuplacer Test is for Placement

The Accuplacer test is a college placement test.

It assesses whether you have the necessary skills in English, reading, and math before beginning college or other technical studies.

Because the Accuplacer is used for assessment and placement purposes, you will not receive a pass or fail result on the test.

Instead, your test results are used to determine which classes you will be required to take during or before your freshman year of college.

Ask Your Testing & Assessment or Placement Center

You may be required to take all of the Accuplacer test, or just certain parts of it.

If you are unsure about what is going to be covered in your situation, you should inquire at the Testing and Assessment Office of your local community college or at the college that you are going to attend.

The math part of the Accuplacer has problems on arithmetic, algebra, quantitative reasoning, statistics, advanced algebra, and functions.

Algebra questions on the test cover all levels of algebra, meaning that you will need to practice your skills in pre-algebra, basic algebra, and intermediate algebra.

The quantitative reasoning, statistics, advanced algebra, and functions parts of the Accuplacer math exam test your skills in advanced algebra, functions, quadratics, geometry, and trigonometry.

Writerplacer – Essays

You may also have to take the Writeplacer, which means you will have to prepare a written essay as part of your college placement and assessment.

Exam Format – Classic and Next Generation Tests

In order to be successful on the Accuplacer examination, you should be familiar with the format of the test.

The new “Next Generation” version of the test contains math, reading, and writing tests.

The Classic Test, which was phased out in January 2019, consisted of two general parts, which were English and math.

Students need to understand the essentials of English grammar in order to do well on the English part of the tests.

Sentence Skills & Reading

You should read this section only if your exam has a sentence skills component.

Although not part of the official exam, the assessments that some colleges offer may still contain a sentence skills component.

That is because the reading part of the Classic test had two sections: reading and sentence relationships.

These English parts of the classic test were sometimes referred to as sentence skills questions and reading comprehension.

The reading parts of the classic test and the Next Generation tests are similar.

For the reading comprehension part of the tests, you review a passage and answer questions about its content in order to see if you have understood the passage.

The sentence relationship part of the Classic test shows you pairs of sentences for each exam question. Then you have to determine the relationship between the two sentences, such as problem and solution or cause and effect.

There are two types of sentence skills questions: the sentence correction type and the sentence completion type.

You will need to find errors in the sentences and then choose the correct answer for sentence correction questions.

For sentence completion, you will see one sentence, and then you will have to re-write that sentence with a new structure.

The sentence completion questions are also known as construction shift questions.
